How to use Harkster with Zapier to generate reports

What is Zapier?

Zapier is an online automation tool that connects your favorite apps, such as Gmail, Slack, Mailchimp, and more. You can connect two or more apps to automate repetitive tasks without coding or relying on developers to build the integration.

What is Harkster

Harkster quickly allows you to create and share concise reports with your customers, teams, and stakeholders.

What can I do with Zapier + Harkster?

Zapier + Harkster is a different way of using the Harkster API without having to write code. Using the Harkster Zapier integration you can send data from thousands of different apps into Harkster.

A sample Zapier + Harkster report

In this tutorial we will connect Zapier's Weather Service + Zapier + Harkster to automatically generate a daily weather report based on a latitude and longitude combination. Here is a sample of the end result:

Let's get started!

Step 1. Create a new Harkster channel

Go to Harkster and create a new channel called "Weather in {Your Location} by Zapier" replacing {Your Location} with a location of your choosing e.g. London.

Step 2: Edit the channel template

In the newly created channel open the template editor from the channel menu. In here add a new "Note" field to the template and change its label to "Today’s weather will be…." before hitting "Save"

Step 3. Connecting Zapier to Harkster

To authenticate with Zapier later you will need your Harkster API Token. You can find this in your user settings.

Enable your API Access if not done already

and copy the Primary API Token clipboard to use later.

Step 4: Creating a new Zap in Zapier

Now let’s switch to Zapier. In your account, create a new Zap.

As the "trigger" or starting point for this Zap, choose "Today’s Forecast" in the "Weather by Zapier" service.

NOTE: The "Weather by Zapier" service can be found by using the search apps field.

After this, Zapier will ask which "Latitude" and "Longitude" co-ordinates to use along with an "Units" selection.

NOTE: You can look up Latitude and Longitude co-ordinates by pressing the "here" link in the field description.

Once you have supplied your inputs press "Continue" to be able to test the "Weather by Zapier" trigger.

Step 5: Connecting Zapier to Harkster

Add a next step to your Zap. In the next step Zapier will ask what you want to do with the weather data. We want to push it to Harkster, so search for and choose "Harkster" from the search apps field:

Choose "Post Report" as the action:

Next Zapier will ask you to authenticate with Harkster. This is where you use your Harkster API Token that you copied to your clipboard earlier.

Step 6: Selecting a Harkster Template to push data to

Once you have successfully authenticated, after clicking "Continue" in Zapier you will be asked to choose which Harkster template you want to use and populate.

To navigate to the "Weather in {Your Location} by Zapier" channel, choose the relevant Account and Workspace the channel resides in before choosing its Template from the drop down lists.

Once the "Template" has been selected, Zapier will render the template's fields automatically in the Zapier form. This template is pretty simple so there’s only 1 thing we can and want to post to it.

In the "Today’s Weather will be…." field select the "Weather by Zapier Summary" field.

When you hit "Continue", Zapier will show you a confirmation screen before sending a test.

Step 7: Data Confirmation

Here you should verify that the "Today’s weather will be…." is populated with text, this being the Summary of the weather.

If this looks good, hit "Test and Review". If Harkster accepts the data you'll see a success message like this.

NOTE: If you do not see this there is likely a problem with the data you are sending. Confirm the data confirmation step above.

Step 8: Viewing the weather in Harkster

Go back to Harkster and go to your "Weather in {Your Location} by Zapier" channel where you should see today's weather posted.

Step 9: Turn on the Zap!

You have completed all the steps! The only thing left to do now is to "turn on the Zap". This will put everything into autopilot mode, so when new daily weather updates are ready your Zapier integration gets activated and will show up in your Harkster channel!
